Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the liquid portion of blood, depleted of cellular components and coagulation factors. It is obtained by centrifugation of coagulated fetal bovine blood collected aseptically. Sterile FBS is produced through a triple 0.1 µm filtration process.
FBS contains proteins and growth factors essential for the maintenance and proliferation of eukaryotic cells in vitro. It also includes attachment factors that enhance cell adhesion by creating a “coating” effect on the plastic surfaces of culture vessels.
However, FBS naturally contains a high concentration of exosomes, which may interfere with the secretion or production of exosomes by the cells under study. To support exosome research, Biosera has developed a proprietary ultrafiltration method that ensures a depletion rate of extracellular vesicles of 95% or more.
All FBS batches are tested for endotoxin and mycoplasma levels, specific viruses (BVD), hemoglobin, total protein content, and cell culture performance.
