Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the liquid part of blood that remains after removing the cellular fraction and coagulation factors. It is extracted by centrifuging aseptically collected, coagulated fetal bovine blood. Sterile FBS is achieved through triple filtration at 0.1µm.
FBS contains proteins and growth factors that support the maintenance and proliferation of eukaryotic cells in vitro. It also includes attachment factors that create a “coating” effect on plastic surfaces, enhancing cell adhesion. These components make FBS essential in cell culture.
Dialysis reduces the concentration of free low molecular weight components such as nucleotides, amino acids, hormones, and ions. Dialyzed FBS is recommended for studies requiring low concentrations of small molecules.
All FBS batches are tested for endotoxin and mycoplasma levels, specific viruses (BVD), hemoglobin, total protein content, and cell culture performance.
