Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the liquid part of blood that remains after the cellular fraction and coagulation factors have been removed. It is extracted by centrifuging aseptically collected, coagulated fetal bovine blood. Sterile FBS is achieved through triple filtration at 0.1µm.
FBS contains proteins and growth factors essential for maintaining and proliferating eukaryotic cells in vitro. It also includes attachment factors that create a “coating” effect on plastic surfaces, enhancing cell adhesion. These components make FBS indispensable in cell culture.
Pre-screening the serum is essential before using it for the culture of mouse Embryonic Stem (mES) cells. mES Cell Qualified FBS is manufactured for maximum in vitro growth and maintenance of mES cells in their undifferentiated state.
All FBS batches are tested for endotoxin and mycoplasma levels, specific viruses (BVD), hemoglobin, total protein content, and cell culture performance.
