Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the liquid part of blood from which the cellular fraction and coagulation factors have been removed. It is extracted after centrifuging coagulated fetal bovine blood collected aseptically. Sterile FBS is achieved through triple filtration at 0.1µm.
Fetal Bovine Serum contains proteins and growth factors essential for maintaining and proliferating eukaryotic cells in vitro. It also has attachment factors that create a “coating” effect on plastic surfaces, enhancing cell adhesion. This makes FBS a crucial product in cell culture due to its diverse components.
Endotoxins, such as LPS from E. coli, are components of the cell walls of Gram-negative bacteria, released when the bacterial cell dies. Their presence can interfere with biological processes, like cell activation. Endotoxin-low FBS is used for LPS-sensitive cell lines, such as macrophages and immune cells.
All FBS batches are tested for endotoxin and mycoplasma levels, specific viruses (BVD), hemoglobin, total protein content, and cell culture performance.
