RPMI-1640 medium was developed by Moore and colleagues at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in 1966 for the growth of human leukemic cells in monolayer or suspension.
RPMI-1640 is a multipurpose medium with numerous applications for a wide variety of mammalian cell lines, including the Jurkat cell line, hybridoma cells, human myeloma, mouse hybridoma, human leukocytes, and B and T lymphocytes.
Its formulation does not contain sodium bicarbonate or phenol red. This version includes L-Glutamine and 25mM Hepes.
