Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the liquid part of blood that remains after the cellular fraction and coagulation factors have been removed. It is extracted by centrifuging aseptically collected, coagulated fetal bovine blood. Sterile FBS is obtained through triple filtration at 0.1µm.
FBS contains proteins and growth factors essential for maintaining and proliferating eukaryotic cells in vitro. It also includes attachment factors that create a “coating” effect on plastic surfaces, enhancing cell adhesion. These components make FBS indispensable in cell culture.
All FBS batches are tested for endotoxin and mycoplasma levels, specific viruses (BVD), hemoglobin, total protein content, and cell culture performance. FBS of European origin naturally has lower IgG levels.
Biosera mixed FBS contains serum originating from the same continent and imported into Europe in accordance with European regulations. They are manufactured according to Biosera’s usual procedures and meet the same quality standards as standard Biosera FBS.
