Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the liquid part of blood that remains after the removal of the cellular fraction and coagulation factors. It is extracted by centrifuging aseptically collected, coagulated fetal bovine blood. Sterile FBS is obtained through triple filtration at 0.1µm.
FBS contains proteins and growth factors essential for maintaining and proliferating eukaryotic cells in vitro. It also includes attachment factors that create a “coating” effect on plastic surfaces, enhancing cell adhesion. These components make FBS indispensable in cell culture.
Tetracyclines are antibiotics commonly used during bacterial infections or to prevent disease in cattle. The presence of residual tetracycline derivatives in FBS can affect biological parameters or Tet-induced gene expression. All FBS batches are tested for endotoxin and mycoplasma levels, specific viruses (BVD), hemoglobin, total protein content, and cell culture performance.
