Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the liquid part of blood that remains after the removal of the cellular fraction and coagulation factors. It is extracted after centrifuging coagulated fetal bovine blood collected aseptically. Sterile FBS is obtained through triple filtration at 0.1µm.
FBS contains proteins and growth factors that support the maintenance and proliferation of eukaryotic cells in vitro. It also includes attachment factors that create a “coating” effect on plastic surfaces, enhancing cell adhesion. This makes FBS essential in cell culture due to its various components.
All FBS batches are tested for endotoxin and mycoplasma levels, specific viruses (BVD), hemoglobin, total protein content, and cell culture performance.
